Teaming up with Sigma Chi Fraternity, OH Kappa took Cincinnati Dance Marathon by storm. The 24-hour dance marathon was held over the last weekend of February, and had over 850 dancers registered to attend. Pi Phi and Sigma Chi brought in over 60 dancers to enjoy the night.Throughout the evening and in the morning, families who are benefited by the money came to share their stories. Powerful, Peyton Stevens, stole the show with her tale. All proceeds go directly into the Children’s Miracle Network which funds Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and many like it.

The team raised almost $900 dollars for the event. Sophomore Tori Roser said, “We had an amazing time getting to know each other. There is always going to be a weird sense of camaraderie once 5am hits. We danced like fools and listened intently to what the families had to say. Overall, CDM was an experience to remember.”

Pi Phi has two chapter members who have sat on CDM’s exec, Devon Stansbury and Brittany Gunther. OH Kappa is beyond proud to have such close ties to this event. The Morale Team, a.k.a. the CDM Cheerleaders, also had four Pi Phi’s on it’s team: Rho Gamma1, Alyssa Vah, Hannah Foureman and Tori Roser. We’re looking forward to our involvement in the planning and participating of next year’s Cincinnati Dance Marathon.

To quote a fellow Delt, your very own Sergeant at Arms Riley Quinn, “I just want to dance!” was the theme for the 24 hour Philanthropy Cincinnati Dance Marathon held from February 25th at noon until noon the 26th. More than 825 participants were registered for the event that raised over $26,000 for Children’s Hospital. Even though ATO and Gamma Phi Beta won the most spirited and Kappa Delta registered the most attendees, Delts made their presence known constantly throughout the event by sending 20 members who took their turn throughout the event while raising $500. CDM was a great experience for anyone who went and heard the stories of these children who have been bestowed miracles with the help and expertise of the staff at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Between their inspiring stories, fun-filled events like musical chairs and basketball, and of course dancing, CDM had yet another successful year. Thank you for all that came out for this wonderful event and hope you can help support it when it returns next winter.

9 months of planning. One meeting every other week at 8:30 pm. Hundreds of emails. Hours of work every day. All for two days and 24 hours of fun, satisfaction, and tired legs. Being a part of the Cincinnati Dance Marathon team has been a massive part of my life for the past year and I am so happy to have been involved in such a great cause. For those of you who haven’t heard of it, Cincinnati Dancer Marathon is a 24 hour dance marathon benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. The University of Cincinnati has a young tradition that promises to grow over the years. Starting just four years ago, we’ve already exploded into a huge event on campus, with the aspirations of reaching even higher heights. Just last year, 600 dancers registered, and about 400 dancers showed up to the marathon. This year, nearly 900 dancers registered, and 600 came to dance their legs off! We raised nearly $26,500 – another increase from last year – and I have to say the amount of spirit and excitement in the dancers who came made all the work so worth it.

The event itself is quite an experience. Everyone leaves their “cool caps” at the door and comes in to dance, enjoy each other’s company, and support some wonderful little kids. And the kids may just be one of the best parts of the entire night. Hearing the stories straight from their mouths – the struggle and the difficulties, but also the hope and the confidence and happiness of their courage – makes dancing endlessly through the night so effortless in the end. I played photographer for much of the night, but I am very happy I did. Very few times do I sit back and observe, and being given the privilege to capture the joy and smiles of people caught in the act of pure happiness.

The dance marathon is many different things to many different people. To some, it is a way to fulfill a community service requirement. To others, its a kind gesture to a friend. To a few, there is a very real and personal connection not only to the cause, but also to the people for whom we are dancing. It doesn’t matter why you’re doing it though, as long as you’re doing it. Despite everyone’s different backgrounds, different motives, different stories, there is one thing we can all do – make a fool of ourselves dancing. To quote a wise, fictional man: “The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you’re uncool.”

I had the utmost privilege of spending a beautiful moment with Alaina, a sister to one of the kids who came to visit and speak from Cincinnati Children’s. I first met Alaina on the dance floor, where we cut a rug with some crazy dance moves. After we were well and tuckered out, we sat down to talk about bracelets, favorite colors, and goofy faces. I asked Alaina why she had come, and she told me she was here for her brother. Even as a young child, Alaina was able to show me some very serious-looking pictures from her brother’s operation. Maybe she was just an incredibly strong individual, or maybe she didn’t fully understand the gravity of the situation from which her brother was rescued. But either way, seeing this story from such a young sibling made me realize how important this Dance Marathon was. It wasn’t about getting service hours or outdoing last year. It wasn’t about any of us. It was and always will be about the kids. To know that in whatever small way our team was able to help support the people that saved her brother’s life was all that I needed. And for whatever it was worth, I am glad I was able to meet Alaina and spend some time with her and listen to her talk about her brother and make her smile and laugh a couple times.

Maybe that’s what we all need in the end. An outlet to be weird. A channeling of our inner non-sense. I don’t think it’s weird or non-sense though. Having the spirit and curiosity of a child is a wonderful thing. And to me, I re-learned the value of this talking and playing with the children that came to visit us. They helped me remember how important enjoying life is, despite the hardest of circumstances. I hope there’s always a small part of me that stays a child. But really, I hope there’s a big part of me that always stays a child. And as long as I stay involved in events like Cincinnati Dance Marathon, I think there’s a good chance I’ll always have a good reminder.

More than 800 students rallied behind the slogan, “taking the chance of a lifetime, to give lifetime a chance,” this weekend in the Campus Recreation Center for the Cincinnati Dance Marathon (CDM).

Students spent 24 hours dancing, playing sports, watching magic tricks, learning self-defense, and much more, all while raising money for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

The event started at noon on Saturday and by 4 p.m., more than 400 students had already been accounted for. Although students are free to leave whenever they want, Stephanie Kenning, vice president of operations, along with other executive board members, encouraged students to stay the entire 24 hours.

“I’m really excited that this many people are staying throughout the entire event,” Kenning said. “Sometimes people come at noon and leave at 3 [p.m.] and just feel like, ‘Yeah, I came and did my part,’ but I love that so many people are staying.”

While some students joined the event individually, many students came as part of a team, complete with matching shirts, and competed against one another for “morale points.”

Students earned points for how creative their outfits were, how much spirit they showed and for how their dancing moves fared against others.

While the activities throughout the night were aimed at keeping students awake and entertained, there were more sobering parts of the event. Members of the 29 families that CDM helps benefit made appearances throughout the night and spoke to the audience about their experiences at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

“Although the games are fun, it was the stories that really lifted our spirits,” said Weston Ott, a second-year biomedical engineering student who attended CDM for most of the night. “If we were starting to feel tired their stories just helped us gain energy and keep going.”

All of the children who went on stage to speak had a different, uplifting story to share. Some of the children were born with various ailments, but others showed the dancers that some things could just happen by chance.

Ryan Korengel, a sophomore at Madeira High School, was playing golf with his friends one day in September 2008 when a tree fell on his head. After spending 90 days in Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Ryan proved his doctors wrong and began to walk again.

Although he is partially paralyzed on the left side of his body, Ryan still plays on his high school golf team and hopes to continue playing in college.

“While I still have my challenges, my message to you is have fun with what you can do, and don’t waste time thinking about what you can’t,” Korengel said.

Payton Stephens, an 11-year-old girl who has become a poster child of sorts for CDM, also shared her story.

This is her third year attending CDM, and people know her as “Powerful Payton Stephens.” She was diagnosed as an infant with multiple ailments and continues to receive ongoing care at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

“What I love best about CDM is that they raise money for Cincinnati Children’s and they just support everybody in it and we get to dance and have fun,” Stephens said.

After the children and their families spoke, students were encouraged to go talk to them and get to know their stories better. The children even participated in some of the activities at the event, from making bracelets to showing people up on the dance floor.

Every family that spoke mentioned how thankful they were to have college students give up a Saturday night to support their cause, and from the spirit of the morale dances, to the mass amounts of twitter updates, it was clear that students were happy to be there #ForTheKids.
